Materials and techniques
Explore a variety of art materials and techniques to enhance your creative process, from traditional art supplies to unconventional mediums.
There are videos and worksheets to enable you to explore and experiment with different art materials and use techniques such as painting, drawing, print and collage.
I include tutorials about how to use art materials from a technical and aesthetic perspective to improve your skills and understanding of line, shape, pattern and form which can then be transformed to any imagery you like with patterns, people places, memories, meanings and imaginations.
By learning from me and then giving yourself time to explore and experiment, you will open up the creative opportunities so that you can express your thoughts and feelings without any technical restrictions.
There are no requirements to be 'good' at art it is beneficial to have some understanding of different art materials so that a wider range of personal themes can be expressed
Creativity Takes Courage so give yourself permission to step out of your comfort zone and allow yourself to experiment with materials without needing to be perfect
Emotional regulation
Make use of the therapeutic aspects of art, understanding how it can regulate your emotions and develop your own creative wellbeing toolbox.
What we know about mental health is that anyone, regardless of age, culture and gender can struggle with their emotional wellbeing and it does not matter how confident or intelligent we are, when we are stressed, depressed, anxious, grieving or exhausted we can struggle to function and find even the smallest the demands of life challenging.
This is why it is important to be aware of your emotions and develop a toolkit of emotional regulation strategies.
Art can be a powerful way of exploring thoughts and feelings and regulating emotions. Having an increased understanding of our emotions and the kind of art that might help allows you to be able to use art to feel calmer when anxious and more energised when feeling tired or fed up.
With a workbook and mindfulness exercises you are invited to reflect on your experiences, thoughts and feelings so that when you make art it is coming from a deeper level of understanding and self-compassion and acceptance.
If you use this course effectively you will notice that you are more attune with yourself and aware different triggers, thought patterns and behaviours and as a result be able to manage your energy levels and regulate your emotions readily.
Expression of your true self
Authentic Self Expression: Make use of a range of visual art and other creative activities to develop your own sustained artistic projects.
The range of videos and activities in the workbooks encourages self-expression throughout the course.
As you progress and make work within your sketchbook or journal, I guarantee that different ideas will emerge, both from conscious thinking as well as subconsciously.
You are encouraged to develop work which explores and expresses your true self so that you feel more aligned, calm, confident and happier overall.
One of my favourite quotes from the artist Pablo Picasso is as follows:
‘Every child is an artist; the problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up’
It reminds me of conversations I keep having with people, whereby they tell me they would like to make more art but ‘can’t even draw a stick figure’ or they used to make art but haven’t done any since they were at school and were told that they weren’t very good so lost confidence.
It doesn't have to be that way, its perfectly suitable and possible to be creative again and whenever you are ready I am here to help you to get started.
Who am I?
My name is Lesley and I'm an Artist and Art Therapist and I'm on a mission to make the world a more creative place. I love sharing the therapeutic benefits of art especially the profound effects that creativity can have on someone's mental health and overall wellbeing.
I may not need to remind you about how important it is to look after your mental health and that of your loved ones. Mental health is discussed about a lot more in society these days yet it can still be very tricky as there is still a lot of stigma surrounding it.
No one can perform well nor be their best selves when holding on to emotional distress no matter how hard they work so its essential that your mental health is prioritised.
The majority of treatments for mental health conditions use verbal methods and although talking therapies can be helpful they are not for everyone.
Sometimes 'words are not enough' and thoughts, feelings and experiences can be too painful to talk about.
This is one of the reasons why I love being an art therapist and I love being able to help people to express themselves, manage their emotions, process traumatic experiences and gain insights in a creative way.
